Situated on the bank of the holy river Ganga, 68 kms from Ghaziabad, Garhmukteshwar is a revered pilgrim centre.Also referred to as Khandvi Van and Shiva Vallabhpur because of its being an important centre of the Vallabh cult, Garhmukteshwar has been associated with mythology.It is said that this was the place where King Shivi, an ancestor of Lord Rama, had passed the fourth period of his life as an ascetic.Later, with the help of renowned sage Parshuram, he built a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.It is also believed that after two Ganas or disciples of Lord Vishnu, Jai and Vijai, had achieved Mukti or salvation at Shiva Vallabhpur the place came to be known as Ganamukteeshwar. With time, this name changed to the present Garhmukteshwar.It is believed that during the Mahabharat period, this place was an important centre of trade and also formed part of the capital of Hastinapur state.Garhmukteshwar and its twin city, Brij Ghat have more than 100 temples.It is also famous for its big annual fair.    The name of the place is derived from the great temple of Mukteshwar Mahadeva. The temple was dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Ganga.Ganges is worshipped here in as many as four different temples.These temples are situated on the cliff overlooking Ganges and below it.One of them is situated alongside Meerut road.The place is famous for its 80 Sati Pillars. These pillars mark the spots where Hindu widows are said to have committed sati.The town also boasts off a mosque built by Gays-ud-din Balban that bears an inscription in Arabic dating 682 Hijri or 1283 A.D.Garhmukteshwar is like mini Banaras.The main attraction is the Ganges and the bathing ghat along it.The Ganges here can be seen flowing water as far as the eyes can see.The river here was of the colour of cold coffee, but unlike how she is at Haridwar and Rishikesh; the Ganga is much cleaner here.Garhmukteshwar is also famous for its bathing fair that takes place on the Full Moon Day of the month of Kartik.About 6 Lacks persons, from far and near, come to have a dip in the river Ganga that they consider to be holy. Another fair, held on the occasion of Dussehra, attracts about around 50,000 devotees.

History of Garhmukteshwar city
According to Thakur Deshraj during the period of Anangpal Garhwals were the rulers of Garhmukteshwar.One ancestor of Rajpal was Jat chieftain named Mukta Singh, who constructed the Garhmukteshwar fort.When Prithvi Raj Chauhan became the ruler of Delhi he attacked Garhmukteshwar.There was a severe war and Garhwals were able to repel the army of Prithvi Raj Chauhan but the circumstances of that time forced them to move out from there and migrated to Rajasthan.At Talawdi when there was war between Muhammad Ghori and Prithvi Raj, Jats attacked the army of Mughals but they did not support Prithvi Raj because he had captured their state.Even one Jat warrior Puran Singh from Garhwal clan became General of the Army of Malkhan.Malkhan had become popular due to support of Puran Singh.When Garhwals lost Garhmukteshwar, they came to Rajasthan and occupied Ker. Garhmukteshwar has also been mentioned in the Bhagvat Purana and the Mahabharata.It is said that it was a part of the ancient city of Hastinapur the capital of the Kauravas.There was an ancient fort here, which was repaired by a Maratha leader named Mir Bhawan.The name of the place is derived from the great temple of Mukteshwar Mahadeva, dedicated to the goddess Ganga.

Garhmukteshwar is located In the Western Uttar Pradesh, India.The tourism season in Garhmukteshwar runs from October to March, when the weather is most temperate.In the winter, temperatures range from 25°C to 5 °C, which are moderate and tolerable compared to the harsh heat of summer. During the summer months, temperatures range from 43°C to 30°C, making outdoor activities extremely unpleasant. As of 2001 India census,Garhmukteshwar had a population of 33,432. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%.Garhmukteshwar has an average literacy rate of 50%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 58%, and female literacy is 41%. In Garhmukteshwar, 17% of the population is under 6 years of age.Around five kilometres from Garhmukteshwar town, flows the holy river Ganga.

Economy of Garhmukteshwar city
The economy of the district continues to be predominantly agricultural in spite of fast developing Industrial sector and rising of the district on the industrial map of the country.Three harvest namely—rabi, kharif and zaid are done.The main crop seasons are, however, rabi and kharif.The main crops of the district are wheat, paddy, maize, gram, peas and sugarcane.Among the cash crops, the major crops are sugarcane, and potatoes. Animal husbandry plays an important role in the rural economy of the district.It provides draught power for cultivation as well as supplements the income of the farmers by animal husbandry products.
