As a result of the nuclear tests conducted by India, Pokaran, a small town in Western Rajasthan located 110 kms away from the district headquarters at Jaisalmer came to prominence. The first nuclear test was conducted here on 18 May 1974 and the second ones thereafter on 11 May 1998.This town has also gained special importance due to the famous fair held in the name of the local deity, Baba Ramdev.

If we speak in terms of architecture, the famous Red Fort located in the heart of the town and the three storied Havelis are a source of tourist attraction. The toys made from mud by the potters in Pokaran are famous all across the country. The Kailash Tekri Temple and the maneating giant Bhairav's cave located in the north are also huge attractions for the tourists. The ruins of the old city of Sathalmer and the Narasar pond are also tourist attractions. In Bhadaria where there is a temple of the goddess as well as probably the largest library in Asia. Pokaran also has the largest firing range in India.
