The reserve is also the location of several archeological sites such as the Neelkanth Mahadev Temple and Garh Rajor temples from the 9th and 10th centuries.The 17th-century Kankwadi fort, located near the center of the park, was where the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb briefly imprisoned his brother Dara Shikoh in the battle for succession of the Mughal throne.The area also has historical buildings associated with the Maharajas of Alwar such as the Sariska Palace, which was used as a royal hunting lodge of Maharaja Jai Singh.

History of Sariska city

Sariska the city has a rich natural heritage with some beautiful lakes and picturesque valleys thickly wooded in parts.Perched on the most prominent of these hills is a massive ancient fort that whispers tales of the rich history of the city.The history of Sariska is as old as 5th century BC when it was mentioned in the Hindu sacred texts that the Pandavas took shelter in Sariksa during the years of seclusion.Under the Mughul rule in the middle ages, the Knakwari Fort was used by Aurangazeb to imprison his brother.During the 8th to 12th century the rich residents of Sariska constructed a number of temples in the region which still stand as symbols of the glorious past of Sariska.Maharaja Jai Singh started the campaign of converting the region to a protected area in the 20th century which led to Sariska being declare a wildlife sanctuary by the Government in 1958.In 1979, It became a part of the prestigious Tiger project.

Geography and Climate of Sariska city

This sanctuary is situated in the district of Alwar in Rajasthan and lies about 110 km from Jaipur.In Summer temperature ranges from 38.3 C to 28.8 C.In winter temperature ranges from 28.3 C to 8 C.Rainy Season is from July to Mid September and very humid i.e.Upto 90%.Best time to visit is from Sept. to March.

According to 1991 census, there were 10344 human beings in 24 villages in the core zone and 243667 human beings in 246 villages in the buffer zone respectively.Human population inside and around the Reserve is increasing rapidly because of illiteracy.

Economy of Sariska city

Economy consists mostly of agriculture and industries.Kharif crops grown in the district comprise of bajra, jowar, maize, tur and other pulses. Rabi crops include wheat, barley, and gram.Some other cereals and millets are also grown.

The large scale industries in the district are related to Iron and steel, machine tools, chemicals and synthetics, and coal fired power plant.Other medium sized industries are involved in manufacturing of edible oils, printing and publishing, and stone crushing.Among cottage industry in rural areas cloth printing and dyeing, lac bangle making, stone carving, and pottery are undertaken.

The main export from the district is mainly agricultural produce like food grains, oil seeds, edible oils, and spices.The main articles that are imported consist of cloth, tobacco, industrial machinery, kerosene, petrol, and diesel.

Flora and Fauna of Sariska city

Major Flora includes Dhok or Anogeissus pendula is the dominant tree species,covering over 90 per cent area of the forest.Boswellia serreta and Lannea coromandelica grow at rocky patches.Kattha or Acacia Catechu and Bamboo are common in the valleys.Some valleys support Palas and Ber.Besides these some noteworthy tree species are Arjun,Gugal,Kadaya,Amla,Bahera.

Major Fauna includes Tiger, Leopard, Caracal, Rusty Spotted Cat, Jungle Cat, Four-horned Antelope, Sambar, Spotted Deer, Wild Boar, Blue Bull, Jackal, Hyena etc.
